Default Mexican War Living History (?)

Greetings,

Mods, I understand if this thread is inappropriate or in the wrong place.

I am interested in connecting with other folks here in CA. with an interest in the Mexican American War, and seeing if there is potential to participate in some events. I have long been a Mexican American War buff and student, but have been disappointed not to find more like minded folks, who must be out there.

I would be interested in falling in with/joining an existing organization. I currently fall in with the 1st Texas Inf, but only a couple times a year as late with the coming of a new baby and the requirements of a crazy career.

However, I would like to put the proper kit together and fall in with some good people.

Regards,

Sam Dolan

Thumbs up San Pasqual Battlefield Volunteer Assn.

Howdy Sam,

If you go to the San Pasqual Battlefield website, you'll find that there's a group that re-enacts the battle. Not sure how authentic they are, but the photos on the site look promising. They also have contact info for the group that may be of more help to you. By the way Mex war sounds good to me, too!

Ron,

Yeah, there's a few decent impressions there; mostly Dragoons, Californios, and a handful of Marines and "Frontiersmen".

While Regular Infantry or Volunteers did not participate in San Pasqual; perhaps a few of us could put together a decent infantry impression (I'm talking small numbers here) for junk on the bunk type LH, or even other events - perhaps once a year?

Let me know what you think.

Default Mexican War Unit

We have a nice small group of people in Northern California that does the 1st New York Legion. 1846 to 1852. We do a line infantry impression (Scotts Drill) along with fife and drum corps and carry it into a militia impression and gold rush impression. Our event happen at the places the Stevenson Regiment were stationed. Monterey, Sonoma and Sutters Fort in Sacramento, along with places the men went to the gold fields in 1848. We do around 4 events a year along with parades and events that the California Fife and Drum attend. We usually do a 24 hour garrison impression, posting of the guard, drill and other living history in first person. The NYL was formed in New York city as a military presents and to be permanent settlers in California after the war. They were to be made up of the finest men and a few women. However, a company was raised out of the Five Points to fill the regiment. Company D saw action in La Paz Mexico. Many fine and famous came out of the NYL. Men as Col Stevenson, Naglee (San Jose) Folsom as of the city of Folsom. As well as the highway man Jack Powers and the street gang the Hounds. All are welcomed to come try our impression.

Thumbs up Mex War Infantry

Sam,

A while back some folks were talking about putting together a small unit, and meeting at Ft.Tejon among other places, but I guess things didn't progress any further than talk on the subject. I tried looking up Mex War living history units on the web, but they're as rare as an honest politician in DC. I'll keep looking, and let you know if I find any info. I'd be game for a Mex War impression, but I'm not getting any younger!

Ron,
If you'd be game, so would I. I'll bet we could get a handful of people together, loose knit around the idea of trying to pull off one or two things a year, standardize an impression, and see what happens. Let me know what you think.

I participate with the 1st New York and the unit is composed of a set of really fine reenactors. Personally I have MEX-AM infrantry and dragoon kits.
Right now I mainly do the Dragoon impression since I am a docent at a local historical park and I chat about the history of the existing adobe. The uniform is period correct.

(Looking for a Halls carbine to complete the impression)

Would love to chat with more folks of like mind and interest on this subject.

On a slightly different note, I will be doing a talk on the American take over of California on Sept 16th in Pleasanton CA. This is being put on by the Museum on Main Street as part of a monthly historical lecture series. Only 250 seats for this one, so please feel free to come join me. I will have the services of Mr. Nelson Snook who will chat about the 1st New York.

Default Update

Greetings,

We've started a Facebook group - The US Mexican War Society of the Southwest - for any West coast & southwestern folks who would like to network and continue to discuss the opportunities for 1840s/Mexican American war living history.
